Mailboxes are a necessary part of life if you want the convenience of receiving mail at your home.

The first impression given to your neighbours or guest is your residential mailbox. Finding the right mailbox is important, because it should last you for many years to come. But there are also primary maintenance tasks that should be done to keep your residential mailbox looking good. It is advisable to frequently check and make sure that the mailbox has not developed any problems.

At least twice a year, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and clean your mailbox. Many recommend using a mild cleaning solution and a wet towel. Wipe down the exterior and interior to keep your residential mailbox looking its best.

Furthermore, after the residential mailbox is cleaned, check all moving parts. Usually, when we retrieve mail, we are in a hurry and we don’t look to see if the mailbox is in good working order. Take a look to see if any parts need to be replaced or sprayed with a lubricant. The doors of the mailbox are vulnerable to problems due to frequent opening and closing. Check them at regular intervals and oil the hinges to prevent squeaking or rusting.

Finally, check to see if your mailbox is plumb. Look at your mailbox from three or four directions and ensure that it is in the right position. If you find your residential mailbox leaning to one side or another, correct it. Keep the mailbox clear of snow and other debris. Also, make it a point to never let the mail build up inside.

Taking the time to maintain it, you can maximise the use and effectiveness of your home’s residential mailbox or post box.
