Most burglaries occur through the front door. Whether it’s the fact that it hasn’t been locked, the lock has been picked, the glass smashed, or the letter box has been fished through, there are plenty of ways that burglars can take advantage of a front door with poor security.

However, there are plenty of ways to increase the security around your front door, so burglars will never see it as an opportunity to break in, and you’ll have peace of mind.

The Visibility

If you’ve gone for high fences and privets to help your front entrance feel more private, then you may need to think again. You might just be providing potential thieves with the perfect cover for breaking into your home. With more privacy comes more opportunity for someone to pick the lock and not be overseen or interrupted. Instead, opt for lower fences to expose any unwanted visitors.

Lighting itself can be a deterrent to thieves, so if you haven’t got any installed, then we’d recommend that you do as soon as you can. Lighting means that a potential burglar is more likely to be spotted if they test the door or try to force the lock.

It’s also a practical feature that means you’ll be able to see your lock when getting home in the dark.

The Door Lock

We’d recommend using a 5-lever mortice deadlock that conforms to BS3621 to lock your door with. The British Standard kitemark means that it has been tested against common theft methods, such as lock picking and drilling, and is therefore more secure than a lock that doesn’t have this accreditation.

Of course, you could have the most secure lock in the world, but if it’s not locked, it’s useless. Get into the habit of locking the door whenever you’re not using it.

The Letter Box

An everyday element used to deliver your post; the letter box is a design component that burglars use to their advantage. Through it, they can use fishing devices to hook your keys, and either let themselves in or steal your car.

There are two ways to tackle this. You could opt for an external post box, and get rid of your letter box, so there is no access into your home, or use a letter box cage to make fishing for keys trickier.

The Door Bell

Upgrade your traditional doorbell for a video doorbell for an extra layer of security and convenience. Wi-fi enabled, a video doorbell facilitates communication through your smartphone with the person dropping off a parcel for you. It can be movement activated, so as soon as anyone approaches your front door, you’ll be notified. Perfect for warding off unwanted visitors.

Alarm System & Indoor Cameras

A home security system is an excellent way to increase the security of your whole home, not just the front door. Firstly, the siren fitted to the exterior of your property will deter burglars. Most of them will think twice before trying to break into a home with an alarm fitted.

Secondly, many security systems and burglar alarms come with door sensors, which means that once the system is armed, you’ll be notified, and the alarm will go off, if the door opens.

Add to this a camera, facing the inside of the front door, and if anyone is foolhardy enough to pop through, then you’ll have their image.
