In this blog Anthony Neary, our security retailer’s managing director reveals five important hotel safety tips to help you stay safe in your room.

1. Check the crime rate in the hotel area

There is a lot to be said for choosing a reputable hotel. It ultimately sets the foundations to ensuring safety and peace of mind during your travels. Prioritise hotels with robust security measures and positive reviews from previous guests.

We would recommend researching the hotel’s safety features, such as surveillance cameras, well-lit parking areas and secure entrances. Or look for accommodation located in safe neighbourhoods or areas with low crime rates. This can be easily checked on sites such as crimerate.co.uk. Additionally, consider factors such as the hotel’s proximity to emergency services and its reputation for cleanliness and maintenance.

2. Keep your room information to yourself

Being cautious with room information is crucial for maintaining safety and security in a hotel room. Avoid openly discussing your room number or travel plans in public areas where strangers might overhear. Additionally, refrain from sharing your room number with individuals you don’t know well.

When checking in, discreetly receive your room key and avoid displaying it in public view. If asked for your room number at the front desk or by hotel staff, consider confirming your identity with other personal information instead. By keeping room details private, you minimise the risk of unauthorised access to your accommodations, helping you feel safer overall safety during your stay.

3. Secure your belongings

Securing belongings is paramount to ensuring a safe and worry-free stay in a hotel room. Avoid leaving valuables unattended or in plain sight, as this can attract unwanted attention. Instead, utilise the in-room hotel safe provided to store valuable items such as cash, jewellery, passports, and electronics. For less-valuable belongings that may not fit in the hotel safe, pack them into your suitcase, zip up so that the two zips are next to each other and thread a luggage padlock between them.

If you can’t check into your room yet or have an early check out and need somewhere to store your valuables, your hotel may have lockers to keep your belongings safe. In addition, if you’re not sure that your hotel has a safe, you could even take a locker with you! Our lightweight Lockabox One™ solutions are less than 1kg in weight and are perfect for stashing goods away. Most hotel room doors have a security chain or bolt, so use this to secure the door slightly open while talking to someone outside. This can prevent strangers from trying to enter the room or being able to see what is inside.

It sounds simple but portable doorstops are a trustworthy incentive. As well as working as a visual deterrent, they can make the door much harder to push open from the outside. Portable doorstops can often be purchased cheaply but can have many benefits.

5. Embrace your privacy

When staying at a hotel you can literally ask not to be disturbed! Often the ‘do not disturb’ sign is only used when having a lie in, but this can be implemented as a tool to limit access to your room. Hang the sign on the back of your hotel door when you are not there to stop housekeeping going into your room. When you do need your room to be cleaned and replenished, lock your items away.

Shutting the hotel room curtains is another tip to stop people seeing when your room is unoccupied. Even if you’re a few floors up, your room can be seen by window cleaners and opposite buildings. Closing the curtains can add an extra layer of security and also make you feel safer.

By nailing the basics when it comes to hotel safety and security, many can stop the worry and begin to focus on enjoying a trip away.
