However, what do you do when the batteries die and you’ve misplaced the override key? In this blog, our security expert Anthony Neary shares how to open a digital safe when the batteries are dead and there’s no key.

1. Arrange for a replacement key

Most of our digital safes come with an override key – a mechanical backup that allows emergency access when the electronic pad isn’t working. If this is lost, replacing this is the safest and most straightforward way to get into the safe and recharge the batteries. Once you’ve replaced the batteries, store your override key in a secure but accessible location away from the safe.

2. Contact a locksmith

To get your replacement key, or if you need urgent access, a qualified locksmith is the best solution. A professional locksmith with experience in safes can usually get your safe open without causing damage to the lock or safe body. Look for locksmiths accredited by the Master Locksmith Association (MLA) or another recognised trade body, and make sure you provide them with the brand and model of your safe to ensure that they bring the right tools.

3. Don’t force it

A lockout can be incredibly frustrating, but forcing the door open or tampering with the lock can do more harm than good. Prying or drilling can permanently damage the safe and risk your valuables inside, and DIY methods seen online don’t apply to all safe models, making the situation worse. Instead, take a step back and explore proper access methods like key replacement.

4. Avoid getting locked out in future

Once you’ve got back into your digital safe, taking a few preventative measures can prevent you from being locked out again. Make sure you check and replace your batteries every 6-12 months and keep your override key in a separate, secure location – ideally not in the same room as your safe.

Being locked out of your digital safe due to dead batteries and a missing key isn’t the end of the road! Don’t fall for DIY online tips and instead contact a professional. Looking to explore safes with more advanced features?
