The last thing you should be worrying about when working out is the safety of your personal items. Gym lockers are a practical solution for storing valuables whilst visit – but using them correctly is essential to ensure that your belongings are secure. In this guide, security expert Anthony Neary talks through how to use gym lockers to keep your belongings safe.
1. Choose the right locker
Ensure you find a locker that is unoccupied, in a well-lit visible area if possible. High traffic places that are close to the main area, whether that’s the gym floor or changing rooms, are ideal for an extra layer of safety. You’ll also need a locker big enough to store all of your items – we’d recommend stowing away your gym bag, rather than carrying it around with you, to keep your belongings packed away. 2. Be selective with storage items
It can be tempting to bring valuables to the gym, especially if it’s a stop off before you head to work or out for the day. It’s often best to leave expensive items like cash, jewellery or electronics at home in a secure place like our Home Safe solutions. If you do have to bring your valuables, keep them in a zipped, small bag inside your locker to avoid any attention. Read this blog for more tips: How to Protect Your Belongings Whilst Working Out
3. Secure your locker
Once you’ve loaded up your locker, keep it secure! If it’s not a Coin Operated Locker, it’s likely that your gym locker will require you to use your own Padlock. If you have a key lock, ensure that you keep the key somewhere safe whilst you work out, like a zipped pocket. You might instead want to opt for a combination padlock, as no key is needed, giving you extra peace of mind. Click here for our full list of recommendations: Top 10 Gym Locker Padlocks
4. Know the gym’s policy
Many gyms have clear policies on locker use – some require you to empty the locker daily, while others offer 24/7 access for members. Always read the guidelines or ask at reception to avoid your items being removed and your lock cut.
Stay aware and report any suspicious activity
If you notice any tampering, loitering or any other suspicious behaviour near the lockers, notify gym staff immediately. Many gyms have surveillance in locker areas, but a proactive approach adds an extra layer of safety for everyone – especially in areas with no CCTV, like changing rooms.
Gym lockers are there to protect your belongings while you focus on your fitness. By being selective with which items you bring to the gym, choosing a secure lock, and following a few simple safety habits, you can enjoy your workout knowing your belongings are safe and secure.
