Popular social media platform TikTok is still reigning in 2024. In recent news it has come to light that 40% of young people are turning to TikTok or Instagram as a search engine instead of traditional sites such as Google and the hashtag #securityhack alone has garnered 4.1 million views. In this blog Anthony Neary, managing director of our security retailer has analysed viral TikTok security tips to assess their truth.

1. Hanging a glass or ceramic mug on the handle

One video on home security tips recommended leaving a mug on a door handle, whereas another user suggested a glass cup. Whilst this in theory makes sense, there are a variety of reasons this is not a good security hack.

If there is an intruder, the glass or smashed ceramic pieces could block an escape route. Alternatively, if there is no intruder, the mug could smash and fall regardless and trigger a false alarm. There is also the risk that the breakage may not wake you up. It would be wiser to invest in a burglar alarm as it can provide a deterrent visually but is also much louder and more likely to wake you. Browse our range: Intruder and Burglar Alarms

2. Taking the batteries out of your Ring doorbell

One TikToker whose video reached 685.5k views suggested taking batteries out of your Ring doorbell to temporarily stop you being caught leaving the house by anyone who can gain access to the camera footage. This hack is one to ignore as the risk it poses to homes is high.

It is not worth the risk of a potential burglar seeing you remove the security protection, knowing the coast is clear to target your home. A video doorbell is a worthwhile deterrent as the motion capture feature could spur intruders to stay away, in fear of being caught on video. Find more: Smart Video Doorbells

3. Replacing door locks and hinges with longer nails

A popular hack which multiple users have shared, is to replace your lock and hinge nails. When the TikTokers revealed the nails which were used to hold them in place, they were short in length and could be easily kicked out of the wall. The advice continued as they suggested buying two-inch nails to make it harder for the door to be kicked open.

This hack is a great and cheap way to secure your home that bit more. The nails are more rooted into the doorframe or wall which in turn makes it harder to kick down. 4. Leaving a pair of large shoes outside the door

TikTok users have suggested the idea of purchasing a set of army boots or large pair of male shoes and placing outside the door as a deterrent for potential intruders. Whilst this may make sense to some users, it is unlikely the burglar would be put off.

Instead of investing money into a pair of boots, it would be wiser to invest it into a home security system. This can be done for the same price or slightly more expensive, but the long-term benefits are worth it. Combining CCTV and smart alarms, our kits make home security simple and easy. 5. Creating a trap for intruders to fall over

One TikToker showed off her husband’s elaborate trick to trip intruders. This involved taking a white piece of rope, tying it to a children’s push along toy and hiding it under a bench, then tying the other end of the rope onto a fence post.

Whilst this may in theory work, having a trap set could be dangerous for everyone and hurt innocent people or even the people who set up the trap. Plus, the trap is not fool proof and could be easily stepped over by determined intruders. Instead, it would be much wiser to choose a deterrent like CCTV cameras.
