What is the recommended max range that a door sensor can be fitted from the control unit?

You can allow up to 80 metres from the control unit to the furthest door sensor.

How easy is it to connect additional sensor to the alarm?

Once the battery tag is removed and you are near the alarm system then the control panel will pick up the additional sensors which you can pair together.

It says that the system is battery powered with rechargeable batteries. Do you get some form of notification of when the batteries are running low and need charging again, and how long do the batteries typically last for before needing a charge?

The rechargeable battery is located inside the Hub and needs mains power, the rechargeable battery will only come into effect when there is a power cut and would give you around 6 hours of emergency power.

Can this be armed/disarmed using the smartphone Android app? Or does it just send a notification that the alarm has been triggered?

Yes you can arm and disarm from the app on your smartphone.

The system says it requires a sim to be placed inside. Does this mean you need to purchase a sim with credit on it, and will it charge the sim like a normal phone for anything such as calls and texts?

You will need either a pay as you go or pay monthly Sim card. Any network is suitable apart from (Three). When data is used the Sim card would be charged.

I would like to install the alarm in a remote building at the bottom of my garden (I have mains electricity in the building), but mount the alarm sounder at my house. What is the maximum range between them possible?

The Maximum range is 80 metres (open field conditions). You may prefer to look at the Yale Intruder Alarms which have a 200m wireless range.

How is the system powered? Does each component require plugging into mains socket or do they use batteries?

The alarm hub is mains powered but all other components are wireless and battery powered.

Does this alarm system connect to broadband to use the smartphone features?

This alarm system uses GSM technology in order to use the smartphone features. The alam hub requires a sim card and does not connect to your home broadband.

Do you have to have have a sim card fitted for the system to work
as I am out of the country a lot and tend to use an I pad to communicate.
As I want a system that uses an app where do you get the app from.

A sim card or connection to a landline socket is required to receive any notifications. The ERA app can be downloaded from iTunes App store for iPhone or Google Play for Android.
