Hi - this might be an obvious question but is the battery required to operate the digital lock? So if the battery runs out does the digital lock itself not function? (or is it just the backlight that doesn't function)

This safe is battery operated and requires battery power to open and lock the door. You will receive a warning when power is running low and you are supplied with a back up key, for use in emergencies.

Does this safe have any fireproof rating, either certified or otherwise? If not, do Yale do a laptop safe (with keypad and override physical key) that is fireproof?

This safe does not have a credited fire rating. None of the laptop safes we currently stock have a fire rating. You may be interested in the Yale Extra Large Fireproof Safe.
