A home and office safe is a secure storage solution designed to protect cash, valuables and important documents from theft. Available in a wide range of sizes and security levels, these safes are suitable for homes, offices and small businesses. Many models can also be securely bolted to the floor or wall for added protection.

Start by considering what you want to protect and where the safe will be installed. Choose a safe with enough internal capacity for your current belongings and future storage needs. An insurance cash rating is an independently assessed value that indicates how much cash or valuables a safe is designed to protect against burglary. As a general guide, the valuables rating is typically ten times the cash rating. For example, a safe with a £2,000 cash rating is generally suitable for protecting up to £20,000 worth of valuables, although you should always check with your insurance provider for their specific requirements.

Not all home safes provide fire protection. Standard security safes are designed primarily to resist theft, while fireproof safes are independently tested to protect their contents from high temperatures. If you need protection from both burglary and fire, choose a model that offers certified security and fire resistance. View our fireproof safes: Fireproof Safes

Yes. Bolting a safe to a solid floor or suitable wall helps prevent it from being removed by thieves and is often recommended to achieve the safe's tested level of security. Most home and office safes include fixing bolts and pre-drilled anchor holes, although installation requirements vary by model.

The best lock depends on how you plan to use the safe. Electronic locks offer quick access using a PIN code, key locks provide a simple and reliable solution, while mechanical combination locks don't require batteries or keys. All provide excellent security when used correctly, so the choice comes down to convenience and personal preference.

The level of security you need depends on what you are protecting. For everyday valuables and important documents, a basic home safe should be sufficient. If you're storing larger amounts of cash, expensive jewellery or high-value items, choosing a safe with an insurance rating gives a higher level of burglary protection.

With the way we work dramatically changing and the majority now opting to work from home, the way in which we secure our work-related valuables, compared to domestic valuables should be considered. For example, laptops that contain sensitive information, relating to GDPR or otherwise should be secured in a laptop accommodating safe. You should also consult with your insurer as to clearly define any insurance policy specifics around fire or flooding contingencies. The good news is that we provide home safes capable of combining the necessary features for both domestic and commercial application, meaning that you shouldn't require multiple safes.

When insuring valuables, including specific items of jewellery or precious metals, your insurer is likely to ask about where and how they will be securely stored. Safes come with insurance ratings that ultimately dictate the value of their contents. A home safe won't necessarily reduce an insurance policy's value, so much as be a mandatory requirement to ascertain one. Before purchasing your safe, speak with your insurance company / broker to get a clear understanding as to the policies requirements, then if you're still unsure, our customer care team are on hand to help answer any questions.

Home safes should be installed in a location out of the way of high traffic areas, in a location not easily discovered, such as a cupboard or wardrobe. Home safes come in both wall and floor installable varieties and, in both cases, must be secured to a solid surface, ideally concrete. Garages often have concreted floors making them ideal for safe installation, although with flats or apartments an outside facing wall is also sufficient in most cases.
