The post box cases are typically made from rust resistant high quality or galvanised steel, ensuring that they won't deteriorate with long exposure to rain. Those with top loading functionality have flaps in place to cover the postal slot ensuring that the contents don't become wet in the rain and the way in which the boxes are constructed means that water is channelled away from the contents.

While many outdoor post boxes are designed to accept letters and large A4 envelopes, they do not typically allow for parcels. This is largely due to the restrictive size of the postal slot. Smaller parcels that would fit through a standard letter box size could be accepted by some outdoor post box models, depending on the box construction.
