Master Lock LCHW20101 Waterproof Fire Chest

Does exactly what it says. Very solid build quality, smooth locking mechanism and the perfect size for holding important personal documents. Hopefully I never have a need to test out its fire and water proofing. More importantly the service provided by safe.co.uk was second to none. Although there was a mistake on their website which meant I initially ordered the wrong product, they arranged for a speedy replacement and a discount for the inconvenience. They even went out to the warehouse to double check the measurements on the replacement to make sure it was exactly what I needed!

We used to have an old tin box for important papers, but when making our wills we were advised to get the waterproof fire chest.

It’s sturdy and heavy, and looks the part, but we haven’t tried flooding the house or burning it down in order to test it!

The documentation is adequate, and it’s easy to extend the warranty and register for a free replacement after a flood or fire on-line

It’s quite heavy, but the in-built handle is more than capable of lifting it.

The only drawback is the key; it’s not impressive (but it works fine).

The unit is supplied with two keys. As we have two Executors, we’d like to have been able to get an extra key (one each, and one for us) – whilst this is possible, it costs around £40! When I contacted Masterlock about this, they said it’s a security issue. So one Executor has a key, the other has instructions to buy a cheap drill and open it by drilling out the lock!

Apart from the exorbitant fee for extra keys, it’s good value.

I no longer worry about the safety of our important documents as this product is great quality at a good price, would highly recommend to anyone wanting peace of mind.

It does exactly what we required of it.

The safe is a very good size and serves our needs completely. There was a fear it would be too heavy for my wife to pick up and carry about. We are pleased to say this safe is very manageable. We are also pleased it has a key to lock it instead of a combination.

It would be very nice to have had the option to write what is in it and to have a convenient place on the safe to place the note. For example Wills, Power of authority, etc. Our main thrust is to protect against fire and keep it personal.

I am very pleased with this product. The build quality is very good and it feels solid and secure. Storage accepts A4 paperwork which is the size of most documents.

My house has not yet caught fire or flooded so I cannot comment on its fire/water proof qualities.

This is a well built waterproof fire chest. I have to be perfectly honest, I have not tested it with fire and water myself, but it is very, very sturdy and I trust that it will do what it is supposed to do. I did a lot of comparison before buying and these seem both very well respected and also decent value. As other reviewers have mentioned, I do wish the inner dimensions were just a tiny bit larger all around, as if your documents are bound, or put in a plastic pocket for example, they are just a little too big. This is rather annoying as, if you have a number of different types of document and want to keep them separate, you need these dividers.

Overall fairly satisfied with product in terms of capacity and price. Downside is that, every time the safe is opened, the cement mix used as a filler flakes out from the seals into the actual safe and over the floor and requires vacuuming up after each use. You'd have hoped the manufacturer would have sorted that design flaw before producing them.

Really sturdy and solid box.
